Billiard Tips for Beginners

If you are a beginner, then this is the billiards tips guide for you. Here you can find useful billiards tips that will help you get the basics of billiards and pool games and improve your play.

  • As a newbie pool player, your first mission would be to improve the steadiness of your stroke. In other words, learn how to hit the same ball you are aiming at. In order to achieve high level of steadiness in your stroke, you must practice straight strokes constantly.

  • Prior to performing the shoot, adjust your eyes so they would be looking straight at the path of the cue ball. While your are performing the shot, have your eyes locked on the object ball instead of on the cue ball.

  • Your stance at the table is very important. It may vary from one individual to another, but here are some general tips you should pay attention to:

  1. The position of your right foot should be parallel to the position of your right hand (if you are shooting with your left hand, do the same with your left foot and hand).
  2. When the cue tip hits the cue ball, the gap between your upper arm and your lower arm should be 90 degrees in angle.
  3. Additionally, only your arm should be moving during the stroke.
  • One of the most common beginners' mistakes is to leave the table before the stroke was completed. It is very important not to move of your standing position until the stroke has completed, i.e. wait at the same position until all the balls on the table are motionless. In addition, do not cause your stroke to cease ahead of time; let your cue to follow through completely!

  • Do not use complicated techniques such as side spins at the beginning, instead focus on performing your straight strokes smoothly.

  • Do not elevate your cue too high, even in cases whereby the cue ball is extremely close to the rail. Your cue should be as level as possible.

  • Before you intend to shoot, do not forget to apply chalk on the cue tip including on its external part.

  • Take excellent care of your cue stick and clean it on a regular basis.
